On integrating large shares of variable renewables into the electricity system

چکیده
In recent years increasing shares of variable RES (renewable energy sources) have changed the structure of electricity markets in Western Europe, especially in Germany. The core objective of this paper is to provide insights on the conditions to integrate even larger quantities of variable RES into the electricity system by using market-based principles and how, straightforward, a sustainable electricity system could work. Our major finding is that we suggest a market-based approach to ensure that competitive forces rather than governmental interferences as capacity mechanisms shape the future of the energy system. The major conclusions of this analysis are: The transition towards a competitive and sustainable future electricity system will be based on an approach of “new thinking” which is to accept a paradigm shift in the whole electricity system. This includes switching to a more flexible and smarter system allowing a greater scope for demand participation, storage options and other flexibility measures. Developing such a system implies also that no politically motivated capacity mechanisms are needed. © 2016 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The shares of state-owned or public companies are supplied in privatization plan. If the financial market be clear and efficient, it is expected that discovered price of supplied shares be efficient too. However, there is no guarantee for the fulfillment of this condition. Specially, implementation of those policies that, for example, a shock to exchange rate or the price of inputs (such as fue...
متن کاملQuantifying the long-term economic benefits of European electricity system integration
This paper aims to quantify the long-term economic benefits that arise from an increasing integration of the pan-European electricity system by means of comparing model-based decarbonization scenarios developed with the model LIMES-EU+. It explicitly accounts for the interplay between transmission infrastructure and renewable generation capacity expansion. We confirm earlier findings that, on a...
متن کاملIntegration of wind and solar power in Europe: Assessment of flexibility requirements
Flexibility is the ability of a power system to respond to changes in power demand and generation. Integrating large shares of variable renewable energy sources, in particular wind and solar, can lead to a strong increase of flexibility requirements for the complementary system, traditionally hydrothermal, which has to balance the fluctuations of variable generation. We quantify these flexibili...
متن کاملOn Integrating Large Shares of Renewables in Electricity Markets
In recent years increasing shares of renewable energy sources (RES) have changed the usual pattern of electricity markets especially in Western Europe remarkably. Due to this, currently, the development of electricity markets respectively the whole electricity system is at a crucial crossing. On the one hand, the way to a sustainable electricity system based mainly on RES could be paved in the ...

This paper determines and compares the cost of energy (COE) of various hybrid systems for several off-grid facilities in North and Far North regions of Cameroon by integrating renewable sources and/or storage with diesel generators. The estimated annual energy production by solar PV systems and wind turbines is also discussed. The aim is to study the application of a high penetration renewable ...
